Fundraiser

Hi Guys its Kendall. I just wanted to share some things about my husband with everyone.
If you have not heard nate wrecked on his dirt bike on November 1st out at the sanddunes he was life flighted to the U of U hospital where he had 3 Surgeries on his neck ( oh yeah he broke his neck and smashed his spinal cord and is paralized from the chest down ) in the first week once he was stable he was moved to the new Intermountain houspital in Murray because the insurance wouldn't cover once he got stable. He has been doing therapy for 2 weeks and he is improving all the time. he has been so strong and amazing and hard working. he has such a positive attitude and i think and all the prayers are what have made him so stong. We don't know if he will ever be able to get any feeling back in his legs his cord was only smashed so it all depends on if the body can heel.
Well anywaise the reason i am writting this besides give everyone an up date, is my family is putting on a fundraiser. It is december 16 at Noahs in lehi. They are having dinner and a live and silent auction so if you have anything you would like to donate it would be greatly appreciated or even come down and say hi would be so great! We are also selling raffle tickets they are $5 for one or $25 for 6. First prize is a Vespa scooter, Second is a TV and sourrond sound, and third is a Laptop so there are some cool prizes I am going to put a few links on the bottom of this post in case anyone is interested. Thanks for all the support and prayers they have definatly been felt and appreciated!

Oct 24th... a perfect Pickle!!!

Sweet Jenny and Ashley (her sister) Hosted a fabulous Pickle Party! Jenny made these cute spiders for those that came to the party, they are magnets, CUTE huh? We ate delicious food and wonderful company. On the menu was... roasted red pepper soup, Chili, Rolls and orange sweet potatoes YUMMMMMY!!!! The Plant in her hand was a gift to Jenny and Ashley for hosting a pickle. The plant is an aloe vera, I received a plant just like this one When I moved into my house 15, 16 years ago I had a friend that gave it to me and I have been harvesting Baby's from it and giving them away for gifts, one year I gave them out for x-mas. Its a fun and useful plant and it will reproduce and you too can give away all those little baby's, cause it will have a ton.
Her is the hostess with the mostess!! Jenny is sporting the skirt we made one together but no pic of me since i was behind the camera, we made them up our selves. I demonstrated how to do the block for our next quilt. We had a couple drawings for a prize to take home, every pickle who attended was in the drawing and there were even some names in there if you were not there for doing certain things like helping fix some blocks or assembling the quilt or binding it ect ect.
Here we forgot to do show and tell or a trunk show so we were all on our way out the door we had a quick one. Cute stuff!!! I also forgot to take pics so I hurried and snapped a couple.
We had alot of abcent pickle's, maybe next time which will be on Jan 23rd 2010.

My Newest Friend and Pickle Member

Hello there fellow Pickles, I just wanted you all to meet my newest friend and newest Pickle. Her name is Debi and she just moved here to Utah in June from California. I met her in a fabric store (surprise, surprise) . I took this pic of us today ,we went to lunch at Gardner Village and of course I had to show her Pine Needle up there, and my favorite place to eat fried green tomatoes ok so it's the only place I have ever had them, but they are so yum yum good. Any way I had fun showing her around and getting to know her a bit, I'm looking forward to a great friendship and getting to know her better. Also so happy to have a new pickle!

Explination

well i had every intention of making it to pickle today I even got my blocks finished which is an accomplishment, but all week long I had it in my head that it was at 2.00pm and when i looked at the invitation and saw that it was at 11 I scribbled down some directions grabbed the baby and my blocks and took off towards Lehi. well when i got to the general area my directions were no and i totally got lost. Then after 20min of searching i gave up and came home. sad!! i still have my blocks if you need them but i can totally understand if you don't. I am so glad that this week is over! Everything has been going wrong i feel like I am loosing my mind!!

I really need to get my magnetics fixed.

My Studio..

So over at Crazymomquilts blog she has ask everyone to post pics of their work space, so here is my studio. It is a 14 x32 room above our garage with 3ft storage space on each side were the walls come up, so it is a sloped storage area, not the easiest to get into but it works. My husband built this room for me when he was building the garage for working in and storing the many cars we have . ( we need a bigger garage)!

This is were it all happens! I have a couple of lady's that I sew with every Sunday evening. Here are just a couple of the machine I own, I have four bernina's in my collection one of which is pink, shown above, an artista 180,a 701 mini matic, and a 930 record, also in my collection I have a singer feather weight, and a new home that was my first machine. I have many other machine just for display but no where to display them at this time. Maybe one day.
Here is where I keep my fabric.
And here!
And here! it is stacked two to three totes deep, I have way to much fabric for one person, if I live to be a hundred I bet I will never use all of this fabric, but I will die trying. I think I have a serious illness, its called fabriholic itis. Seriously this is not even all of it I left out some pics of other stash zones.
And here are the three foot of storage space behind the quilting machine. Which quite a few of them are full of fabric but mostly lots of STUFF.
And here is the other side of the room, it is complete with a refrigerator, ironing area and just a junk collection, one day I plan to clean all of this mess up. One day really soon I have got to get a plan that works well in this room, I need HELP!! In more ways than one. LOL.

Binding tip...

Ok so I recently visited a quilt store to purchase some fabric for my beautiful polka dot quilt, so it had to be just right. I found one I had to have , took it to the counter only to find out there was not enough of it, the lady at the store told me she had more of it at home and did not use it but it was already cut up for binding on the bias. So I told her I had never done the binding like that, I do a ONE piece binding she convinced me that it was not that big of a deal. WRONG. The only reason I did it cause it was perfect for what I needed and it was already cut, but never and I mean NEVER again will I do it that way. Big pain in the (you know were) . So if the lady's at the store want to cut your fabric for you on the bias, tell them NO thank you!!! There are just to many seams to sew. Hope this helps you.

A response to:

To pre-wash or not to pre-wash

So, i was always told that i need to prewash my fabric before i start a project, but a freind told me that she never pre-washes her fabric. So i am asking your opinion on the subject.

I never pre-wash unless it is some funky type fabric that might bleed color into the other fabrics. I used to spend hours pre-washing and pressing (ugh...) all my pieces before using or storing until I read an article from Fons & Porter. They explained how in the past, quilt fabrics were less stable in their weaves and quality, so pre-washing was a necessity to ensure no color bleeding and even washing and shrinking after your project was done. Now, fabrics are much better quality (at least those fabrics made by leading manufacturers), dyes are a lot more stable, and while their might me some shrinking, it's usually uniform and negligible. I think the exception would be flannels. I always preshrink flannels since they shrink so much more than regular cottons. Plus, it's so much nicer to cut fabric that is 'new' and crisp with a little starch!! And a quilt that shrinks up a little bit after washing is so pretty! It gives it a kind of antique look right off the bat!

Disclaimer******With fabric you really do get what you pay for. (unfortunately....) For a quilt that is going to last long enough to make all the effort worthwhile, use high-quality fabric. Even though some stores carry 'name-brand' fabric, and might even be the same print as more expensive fabric, they are not made with the same components. It's like sheets--you can buy 700-800 thread count sheets now for pretty cheap, but if the quality of the cotton that they use isn't great, your just going to get stiff, yukky sheets. For this reason, you should be picky about what you buy. Ask every single quilter who has made quilts from both qualities of fabric. I could show you some great examples from my quilting past, but they actually fell apart and had to be thrown away. If I feel like I can't afford high quality brand new fabric, I pull from my stash, or use a coupon for the good stuff, or just wait until I can afford it. It's worth it!

( This is mostly a stab at crappy Wal-Mart fabric. Sorry if anyone uses it, but it really can not be compared to 'quilting fabric' from legit stores. I get mad when I see ladies scrambling to buy their $1-$2 dollar flannel to make into humanitarian blankets for little, sweet babies in foreign countries. Don't they know those blankets have to be washed on a rock for heck sake? Look at it sometime. It's woven like cheese cloth! You can see right through it!!) OK. Rant over.

Official advice: Pre-shrinking won't hurt, but it won't necessarily help anything either. If you get your groove on while ironing, go for it! If you have 20,000 other things to spend your time on, don't bother unless the specific fabric requires it, like flannels or wools that you want to felt.

New Fabric

This is my cute new fabric that i got. I am going to do another flower blanket for Ashlyn in this:

The second picture is a preview to what it might look like I have not decided if I want to randomize the background or leave it in blocks or do something completely different. Any help would be great!

Fabric Find

These are a few fabrics I found as I was paying for a clearance piece I found and out of the corner of my eye I spotted Pink turtles, then I saw pink frogs AHHHHHH!!!! How often do you see pink frogs? NEVER!!! So I had to get them, I don't know what I will do with it yet But I will think of something I'm sure. Two yard of each should be enough.

This one I think shall be a pink pickle skirt. Those paisleys look like a pickle .

This was My clearance find! cute butterfly's.
Just some more berry's for my collection.
